The Goodyear Tires and Rubber Company was founded in 1898 in Akron, Ohio and since has become one of the four largest tire manufacturers in the world along with Michelin (France), Bridgestone (Japan), and Continental (Germany). Originally the thirteen employees of Goodyear manufactured bicycle and carriage tires, along with rubber horse shoes and poker chips.  Company founder Frank Seiberling named the company after Charles Goodyear, inventor vulcanized rubber. Early Goodyear tires grew in popularity thanks to the ease in which they could be detached and replaced, making them a low maintenance choice for most motorists.

In 1911 Goodyear began experimenting with airship designs, eventually designing airships and observation balloons that greatly aided in the Allied victory in World War I. In 1924 the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corproation was formed through a partnership signed between Goodyear CEO Paul Weeks Litchfield and the German Luftschiffbau Zeppelin company resulting in the iconic Goodyear Blimp first flying in 1925.

Today Goodyear is also the sole supplier of tires for NASCAR and the most successful supplier for Formula One racers.
